Blood pressure and supplements
I have read that both ginseng and ginkgo biloba can be used as alternatives to Viagra - however, I am worried about the risks, especially since I have had a by-pass operation. I have also heard that these supplements can affect blood pressure. What do you think?
Since you are taking anticoagulant drugs for your heart condition, you are right to be concerned about the effects of herbs which work by boosting the circulation. This is, of course, the reason they are excellent alternatives to Viagra, but not, says herbalist Andrew Chevallier, when you have had a by-pass. This does not mean you can never take them. It simply means you need to discuss it with a your medical consultant who can then, if you do go ahead, recalibrate the doses of your prescription drugs accordingly. You should not experiment with ginseng if you have high blood pressure and even garlic, which also improves circulation, can be risky when taken in large quantities.
*Andrew Chevallier practises in North London. An initial consultation costs £35. Follow-up appointments are £17. Expect to pay an additional £5 per week on your herbal remedies.
