Barrier cream for hands
I work with vehicles in the service and valet bay and so constantly have my hands in water and cleaning chemicals. Although I use a barrier cream, it soon rubs off and my hands are cracked, bleeding and very painful. Can you suggest anything to help?
Lots of psoriasis and eczema sufferers have the same problem so I contacted The Alternative Clinic in London which specialises in these skin conditions for their recommendations. The founder, Sandra Gibbons, recommends from now on, you only use an olive oil soap called Oliva, which is chemical-free. To protect your hands from your job and from infection the open wounds she suggests you use two products. Hydrapharm No. 1 Skin Formula contains dead sea salts that will act as an antibacterial agent but you need to dilute the formula down by a factor of three to make a very mild solution. Bathe your hands in this using cotton wool both before and after work. Hydrapharm No. 2 Skin Formula will act as a protective barrier so apply this afterwards. You should then invest in both cotton and rubber gloves to protect your hands at work. The cotton will prevent sweating. The rubber will keep your hands dry.
*Hydrapharm No. 1 Skin Formula costs £11.95 for a supply, which should last you two months. Hydrapharm No. 2 Skin Formula costs £12.95. Both products are available from The Alternative Clinic (0171-381 2298) and the price includes p&p.
