Can you tell me about bags under the eyes? What are they and what causes them and how can I get rid of them?

Although in youth, bags under the eyes are a telltale sign of too many late nights, as you get older they are the unhappy result of a progressive loss of elasticity to the skin and an accompanying loss of tone to the muscles of the face, including those around the eyes.

In yoga, we do a very simple but effective pose called Simhagarjanasana or the roaring lion pose to tighten all the muscles in the face and to banish bags under the eyes. You will find this kneeling pose, which is also a great stress-buster, described in any good yoga book.

To try and get rid of the problem for good, avoid drinks before bedtime and give smokers and their secondhand smoke a wide berth, since both can aggravate the problem.

Reducing the amount of salt in your diet can also make a difference and one of the best tips for achieving this is to switch to one of the seaweed condiments now available from health shops which will both stop your food from tasting bland and keep you from reaching for the salt pot.
