Vitiligo and bronchitis
I have extensive vitiligo and also suffer from several bouts of bronchitis each year. Can you tell me more about olive leaf extract, which I have heard may help. Also, is it only available from the US or can we get it here too?
Nobody knows what causes vitiligo - which is characterised by chalky white spots of skin where the production of the skin pigment, melanin, has stopped. One theory is that it may be related to a thyroid or autoimmune problem, in which case you should be careful about taking immune-boosting supplements without proper medical supervision.
Olive Leaf Extract (OLE) has been shown in American trials to be effective against difficult-to-shift infections, especially herpes, bladder and fungal infections. It contains elenolic acid, which has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties, and has even been shown to work where conventional antibiotics have failed.
Unlike echinacea, which concentrates solely on boosting the immune system, OLE has a strong antimicrobial action and so would help in preventing another attack of bronchitis - but because you have the vitiligo, you may be better off using another supplement called bromelain which has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action but which will not interfere with immune function.
