Tinnitus and vitamin B12
Tinnitus and vitamin B12

I suffer from Tinnitus and am quite demented by it. The noise in my head grows louder each day and nights, especially, are driving me mad. Can you suggest anything that might help? I have read that ginkgo might be useful. What do you think?

The supplement you need is vitamin B12. In trials, almost half of all patients with tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss were found to be deficient in this nutrient which is also known as cobalmin or the “red vitamin” since it is found in red meat. The recommended daily intake is just 2 mcg (micrograms) a day but for a therapeutic dose, you will need 2000mcg a day for the first month after which you cut back to 1000mcg daily.

The theory is that this nutrient plays a key role in maintaining and stabilising nerve cells and all their activities. It is especially important for the synthesis of the myelin, fatty sheath that covers nerves cells to accelerate the transmission of “messages” between them.

When you walk into your local healthstore and tell them you want this very high dosage, this they will probably freak out - but there is no known toxicity associated with this nutrient and what is more important is that you use a brand where the B12 is not synthetic but sourced naturally. I recommend you use Solgar’s 1000mcg B12 which at £9 for 100 tablets is cheaper than many of the synthetic forms. To find local stockists, call 01442-890355 and take two a day.
