Tinnitus - easing the symptoms
Please could you advise on any remedies to ease the symptoms of tinnitus. The worst of them is the constant buzzing in my left ear.
In trials, almost half of all patients suffering from tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss were found to be deficient in vitamin B12 - and in case you think this may have been simply a coincidence, only 19% of those with normal hearing had the same nutritional deficiency. The theory is that this nutrient plays a key role in maintaining and stabilising nerve cells and all their activities. It is especially important for the synthesis of the myelin fatty sheath that covers nerves cells to accelerate the transmission of “messages” between them.
Also known as Cobalmin or the “red vitamin”, vitamin B12 is found in red meat. We only need very small doses of B12 (the recommended daily intake is just 2 micrograms). To correct an underlying deficiency, you need to take 2,000mcg each day for a month and then reduce this dosage to 1,000 mcg a day. If you are vegetarian, you may be at risk of a deficiency and so may want to think about supplementing your diet with a daily dose of 100mcg a day. (Nobody has ever reported any toxicity from this nutrient, so do not worry about the relatively high dosage being recommended.)
