Supple and healthy joints

Which of the following supplements would you recommend to help keep my joints healthy and supple through winter? (a) Bromelain? (b) Glucosamine? (c) MSM (d) Udo’s oil?

I would recommend all four nutrients since they do different but equally important jobs in the body; Bromelain is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that will prevent joints from swelling; glucosamine is needed to make the glucosamine polymers that are an integral part of the protein ‘mesh’ that calcium and other minerals cling to in order to make healthy bone; MSM (short for methylsulphonylmethane) is a form of organic sulphur that plays a key role in helping prevent degenerative conditions such as arthritis. The good news is that all three are now available in a new combined supplement called Advanced Joint Support by Lifetime. It costs £42.95 for 90 tablets and is only available in the UK from Victoria Health on 0800-413596

Researchers in Cardiff can also now tell us how certain oils work to keep joints healthy. They have identified specific inflammatory enzymes that are ‘switched off’ or disabled by the fatty acids present in cod liver oil, flaxseed, and the brand you are using, Udo’s oil, named after the Canadian nutritionist, Udo Erasmus. To learn more about the difference between good and bad fats, read his book, Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill, published by Alive Books and available by mail order from 0113-230 1993.
