Serrapeptase
I have heard amazing things about an enzyme known as serrapeptase which was originally discovered in silkworms and is now manufactured naturally. It claims to provide assistance with a range of health problems but especially pain, chronic inflammation and clogged arteries. What do you think about this remedy and where can I get it in the UK?
Serrapeptase, also know as Serratia peptidase, is produced in the intestines of silk worm larvae to break down cocoon walls and has now been shown, in numerous clinical trials, to help prevent both swelling, due to inflammation, and fluid retention. Even better, it is an excellent pain-killer thanks to its ability to block the release of pain-inducing substances called amines from inflamed tissues.
Still relatively unknown in this country, it is widely used by physicians throughout Asia and Europe and in clinical trials on post-operative patients. For example, it was shown to reduce swelling by 50% following surgery to the knee, compared with controls, and to alleviate pain altogether within 10 days.
While the evidence for the effectiveness of this remedy against pain and inflammation is good, its role in helping prevent the build-up of arterial plaque, and breakdown existing deposits, is still largely anecdotal and requires more investigation.
Serrapeptase has been shown to help reduce breast engorgement in fibrocystic breast disease and to significantly enhance the effects of antibiotics in treating respiratory disease. It is safe and well tolerated and so, for anyone suffering from chronic pain and inflammation, is definitely worth considering as an alternative to non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
In the UK, you can order this supplement which is sold as SPzyme from the Nutricentre (0800 587 2290) where 60 veggie capsules cost £17.95. Each capsule provides a therapeutic dose of 200mg; take one capsule 2-3 times a day.
