Rosacea and azelaic acid
Rosacea and azelaic acid

I lead a healthy and happy lifestyle but for many years, have sufferered from acne rosacea. Not only does this cause discomfort around the nose and chin, it is not a pretty sight. I am taking Metrogel but the problem is unrelenting. Is there anything I could try?

Nobody knows what causes this inflammatory skin complaint which affects more women than men and is given nothing like as much attention as acne. In fact, although it is often referred to as adult acne, it is not the same condition at all.

Metrogel is an antiobiotic - and if you are still taking it, you should also be taking a probiotic to replenish levels of good bacteria in the gut which are killed off by these drugs.

I usually recommend grapeseed extract and vitamin C for acne rosacea but, according to new research reported in the American Journal of Dermatology, there is a more natural compound which is more effective than Metrogel or these alternatives.

Azelaic acid, which occurs naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In clinical trials, where 40 rosacea patients were told to apply azelaic acid cream to one side of their face and Metrogel to the other, researchers found that after 15 weeks of treatment, the facial lesions (pustules) treated by azelaic acid cream reduced by 78.5% and those treated by the conventional drug reduced by 69%. They concluded that the natural cream was “significantly more effective.”

Although approved by the FDA in America in 1995 which means you can now buy this cream off the internet, this is currently a prescription-only medicine in the UK where it is sold as Skinoren, so I would go back to your doctor and ask to change your prescription to avoid the side-effects of long-term use of antibiotics.

The Helen Sher Skincare system and make-up range is designed for both acne and rosacea skins. It is worth investigating for chronic conditions. The Sher system recently launched their Skin support formula to help skin from the inside. The supplements are packed with therapeutic herbs, minerals and probiotics. For those unable to attend a personal consultation at the Bond Street studio in London, clients can have a tailor-made programme prepared through the Sher System website or by post. Information packs are sent out free of charge. Call (0207) 499-4022 for further information.
