Quality skincare for dermatitis sufferers
I suffer from dermatitis and am worried that my cleanser or make-up may be making it worse. Can you recommend a good quality skincare system that will not cause any adverse reaction?
Dermatitis is an inflammation of the upper layers of the skin and is usually caused by one of two mechanisms; irritation caused by an agent in say the make-up, soap or even washing powder you are using, or allergy - where the body is having a different but equally troubling reaction. The most common causes of the latter are cosmetics, metal compounds (in jewellery), drugs in skin creams, and chemicals used in the manufacture and cleaning of clothes.

The fatty acids, which the body cannot make but must get from the diet, are also crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Take a fish oil supplement (check it is from an unpolluted source from a company like Higher Nature; 01435-882880) or, if you are vegetarian, take an alternative such as evening primrose oil. Calcium is important for skin too - but if you take it as a supplement ,you must take magnesium as well. The ideal ratio is 2:1 in favour of the calcium.
If you want to keep your skin looking good, cut out tea, coffee, and cigarettes and try to eat more healthy salads and vegetables. Also try drinking two or three cups of organic nettle tea each day which will help detoxify the liver and relieve any internal congestion that may be causing additional problems.
