Preparation for hysterectomy
I am having a hysterectomy and so want advice on preparing my body for surgery and healing afterwards. I already take 1g of vitamin C every day.
Carry on taking the vitamin C, which will help the body cope with the trauma of surgery, and start taking a brand new supplement called hyaluronic acid (HA), which works to support both the skin and other connective tissues in the body.
I have written about this agent before - it is the key ingredient in a range of products for gum health - but it is now available for the first time in the UK in capsule form, which is excellent news for me since I had been using the gum gel as an eye cream!
As well as promoting the production of new connective tissue, including cartilage (which means this supplement can also help alleviate joint problems caused by wear and tear, including osteoarthritis), it has also been found to be an active part of the immune system since it helps the mobilisation and movement of white blood cells to fight infection. In other words, this is a fantastic agent for immune support, joint support and skin repair and maintenance. Levels of HA decline dramatically as we age which is why, in the US, this substance is now being marketed as an anti-ageing remedy too.
Lifetime’s Natural Hyaluronic Acid costs £29.35 for 30 capsules from Victoria Health (0800 413596); the excellent Derma E American skincare range has also been extended to include a new HA range of topical products including an HA firming serum, an eye cream which combines HA with antioxidant pycnogenol and a rehydrating day cream; all available from Victoria Health as before.
