Post Viral Fatigue/ME
I’ve been unwell for almost three months and after endless tests, my GP has diagnosed post viral fatigue or ME. She has not suggested any treatment and I’ve been left with the impression that I just have to live with this for the rest of my life. Since I have a toddler to look after, I really need an alternative.
ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome affects substantially more females (85%) than males, more people who have an on-going history of allergies and is more likely to strike over-achievers who set high standards for themselves.
In 40% of cases, there is also a proven link between Chronic Fatigue and an infection by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). Although still the minority, 40% is significant because depending on the tests being used, a significant number of individuals - up to 15% - who have had the EBV infection will still test negatively for it.
As a member of the herpes family of viruses, EBV has the same ability to remain dormant in the body long after the primary infection. It “hides” in the salivary glands and the B-cells of the immune system where, unless something goes wrong, it can usually be kept in check by the other immune system cells.
The herb that acts specifically against the Epstein-Barr virus is the humble hedgerow plant, Elderberry, sales of which have rocketed in America in recent years. The way it works is that the active ingredients inhibit or block the virus’s replication mechanism. It is also a potent immune tonic.
*Solgar makes a supplement that combines a standardised Elderberry extract (150mg) with the equivalent dosage of powdered raw herb. Call 01442-890355 for stockists and take as directed on the bottle.
