Poor circulation - massage and skin brushing

Have you come across a simple, hand-held massager that will help maintain good circulation in the colder weather? If so, where can I get it and how much does it cost?

The mini-massager I like is the cute-but-effective Animasseur. Available in a range of four-legged shapes, including a dog, a horse and a pig, it is made from wood and is just the right size to massage very precisely down each side of the spine and back up again. You can also safely use it on other parts of your body, including the neck and shoulders. It costs just £9.95 plus £1.50 p&p. To mail order, call 01256-896982.

Skin brushing can also help boost both circulation and lymphatic drainage in the body. Unlike blood, which is pumped around its vessels by the heart, the lymph system relies solely on the movement of the body to keep it flowing. Signs of a sluggish lymphatic system can include constipation and skin eruptions, and since skin brushing works to accelerate the elimination of toxins from the body, it should always be included as part of any New Year detoxification programme.

The best time to brush your skin is after a shower or bath. Towel yourself dry and skin brush each morning before you dress. To start, begin with the soles of the feet and work upwards towards your heart, brushing gently at first, until the skin gets used to the sensation. It will redden - but if it hurts, you are being too rough. Brush the skin in single, upward strokes towards the middle of the body. After your legs, thighs, and torso, front and back, brush both arms from the tips of the fingers to the tops of the shoulders. Never brush the face, but do brush the scalp and the neck. Brush the neck from under the chin, downwards and the top of the chest downwards too.

Most health stores sell a long-handled brush that is specially designed for the job, but if you cannot find one locally, you can mail order one from The Nutricentre (0800-587 2290). It costs £7.95 plus £1.50 p&p.

*Avoid skin brushing if you have an infection, cancer, high blood pressure, or any underlying heart condition.
