Anxiety and stress

suffer from anxiety and stress when faced with the prospect of certain situations including being in crowds; on the street, at the theatre or confined in a lift. Can you recommend anything?

As you probably already know, the best-selling anti-anxiety herbal remedy Kava Kava, which I would have recommended, has now been withdrawn from sale in the UK following still disputed reports of a link to liver toxicity.

I really think, since these are everyday situations that provoke this reaction, you would also benefit from hypnotherapy - but only if you find an experienced and qualified practitioner. If you can make the trip to London, then I would recommend an appointment with leaing practitioner, Charles Montagu, who co-runs an integrated clinic called The Health Partnership with doctors in South Kensington. The clinic number is 0207-589 6414.

In the meantime, you would also benefit from taking a herbal supplement called Relora which I have written about before as a safe alternative to Kava. It is an extract of Magnolia and, in clinical trials, it has been shown to reduce anxiety levels, increase feelings of relaxation and reduce levels of the stress hormones the body pumps out when we are feeling anxious. This action is significant because hormones are, in effect, the highly sensitive chemical messengers of the body and even small raises can have dramatic effects including the raised blood pressure and breathlessness that typify a full-blown panic attack.
