Organic herb suppliers

We are hoping to convert our newly-acquired 34-acre farm to organic status and have yet to decide which crops or plants to grow. We regularly read that certain plants are in short supply for medicinal and homeopathic use but do not know where to go for more detailed information. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

The good news for you is that the UK’s leading - and only - organic herb specialist is not too far away in Somerset. Hambleden Herbs is run by Mike and Gaye Donaldson, and they have also produced a free Grower’s Pack to give advice to people in your situation. To order one, or talk to the Donaldsons, call 01823-401205.

You may remember I have also written before about the global shortage of a herb called goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). This is another of those potent immune-boosters and I actually prefer it to echinacea. Having checked with a few sources on your behalf, I have been told it is possible, in theory, to grow this plant in the south of England but that it can be a tricky crop so you would need to really investigate its viability on your farm.
