Oral thrush

I have suffered from oral thrush for the past two years. My GP gives me the antifungal drug, Nystatin and my symptoms, which include raised patches of inflammation on my tongue towards the back of my throat, do lessen for a few days but then return more aggressively than ever. I am now very distressed by this.

The first thing you need to do is detemine, through laboratory tests, exactly which organism is responsible for your infections. If these tests confirm that you do have a candida (yeast) infection - which we commonly call thrush - then you need to adopt a three-pronged treatment plan.

First, eliminate sugar and refined white flour products from your diet, which will start to starve the fungal cells. To prevent re-infection, adopt strict hygenic practices, including disinfecting your toothbrush after use. Finally, you need to take remedies that have been formulated to kill off fungal cells, and use a liver-protecting herb, such as milk thistle complex, to support the liver through the side-effects of the die-off stage.

I recommend two Biocare products, OxyPro and Mycopryl, to kill off the yeast cells. You will then need to rebuild levels of the good bacteria in the gut that would normally prevent a fungal overgrowth by taking a probiotic supplement. Biocare's BioAcidophilus outperforms most other products in independent tests. The company also makes a supplement called Oregano Complex that will help prevent re-infection.
