Naturopathy training in the UK
Naturopathy training in the UK

I have always been very interested in natural health and am really impressed by some of the courses on offer in Australia. I am now looking for a training institution in the UK - but while there are numerous colleges for homeopathy, Chinese medicine and nutrition, I have not found one for naturopathy. I want a training centre where I will get a good foundation in medicine and nutrition, an introduction to the different therapies and diagnostic tools and the chance to specialise in a chosen subject. Can you help?

I was deeply impressed when I first discovered that many of the natural health practitioners who trained in South Africa, including homeopaths, spent the first two years of their training in the same anatomy and physiology classes as student doctors. With a foundation like that, you know that they really do understand the human body.

The good news for you - especially as you live in London - is that you can do the training you want on your doorstep. The College of Naturopathic and Complementary Medicine (CNM) is now in its third year. You can enrol for a part-time or full-time training which will cover all the areas you are keen on and which will also allow you to specialise. You may, for example, train as a naturopath but specialise in Western herbalism. You can expect to graduate within 3-5 years, depending on how you structure each module and your qualification will enable you to practice in the UK.

The CNM curriculum, which is based on training on the Continent, breaks new ground in the UK where, until recently, naturopathy was always lumped with osteopathy for training. In other words, you could not train in the one discipline without the other. Now, you can concentrate on naturopathy alone.

Since its inception three years ago, the CNM has also gained an excellent reputation for attracting some of the best speakers in the field.
