Glucosamine Sulphate and shellfish allergy
I know lots of people take Glucosamine Sulphate to help their osteoarthritis and with other joint problems but I am not sure if this supplement can be taken by anyone with an allergy to shellfish. I have seen this warning on some brands but not on others. I also notice that some formulations contain Chondroitin and others do not. Is this what makes the difference?
The allergy risk has nothing to do with whether the product contains Chondroitin or not but is linked to the fact that some manufacturers source the Glucosamine - which helps strengthen bone - from shellfish, especially oyster shells. It makes sense then, if you know you have an allergy to shellfish, to check with the manufacturer where the glucosamine in a particular product comes from.
I have written previously about a product called Collagen Plus which is made by Arthrovite and which was launched following German trials which showed the collagen ended up exactly where the body needs it - in the joints. This formulation contains bovine glucosamine taken from the cartilage-rich trachea of cows. It is sourced from the Far East and will not trigger an allergic reaction if you are sensitive to shellfish.
Collagen is the essential building protein for cartilage and Collagen Plus also contains the Chondroitin you mention. This is sourced from either shark’s cartilage or from cows and is included because it attracts more fluid into the spaces in which the joints articulate and so keeps them better lubricated.
*Collagen Plus comes in powder form which you dilute with water to create an orange-flavoured drink which you take once a day, after breakfast. A month’s supply costs £26.99. Mail order from Arthrovite on 0800-0181282. (p&p is free).
