This condition is the result of an infection of the eyelash follicles or glands at the outer edge of the eye, and so one of the symptoms is that you may also lose some eyelashes.

Vitamin A plays a key role in treating all eye disorders and you should take the equivalent of 25,000 IU daily. This is one of the big three antioxidants. The other two are vitamins C and E and for this problem, you also need to be taking vitamin C - which will strengthen your immune system to protect against a recurring infection. Vitamin C is also enhanced when you take it with a bioflavanoid.

These also have an antibacterial effect but the body cannot make them and so must get them from your diet. If you really want to boost the action of the vitamin C, take it with the bioflavanoid quercetin and with bromelain, an enzyme found in fresh pineapple juice which also works synergistically with quercetin.

Avoid touching your eyes during an infection and reduce the redness by bathing the affected areas with a warm compress that has been soaked in an infusion of the herbs eyebright or goldenseal. I simply water down a ready-made tincture to do this. Also avoid unnecessary eyestrain, including long hours in front of a computer, since this can be one of the primary causes of this problem.
