MSM and fatigue
I've been using MSM for some time which, unfortunately, leaves me feeling so tired I can barely get out bed in the mornings. Even 50mg a day leaves me exhausted. Is this a normal side effect, or am I doing something wrong like taking too much?
Methylsulphonylmethane or MSM is a precursor source of sulphur, that the body needs to make both cysteine; an amino acid that is important in the formation of new skin and in detoxification, and methionine; another amino acid which helps the body break down fats in the diet and which supports liver functioning.
It occurs naturally in some green plants, including field horsetail (Equisetum arvense), some fruits, vegetables, grains, and blue-green algae and is also present in milk, urine and both bovine and human adrenal glands, but it is easily destroyed by both heat and dehydration.
People take MSM supplements to help relieve chronic joint and musculoskeletal pain and to help reduce scar formation after surgery and while some adverse effects, including nausea, diarrhoea and headaches, have been reported I have not come across any reports linking MSM with fatigue or any contraindications to suggest this could be a side effect.
Typically, people take between 1g and 3g daily, with meals, which means you are currently taking so little, not only is it unlikely to be responsible for the exhaustion you feel, it is not enough to be considered a therapeutic dosage in any event.
Have you thought about consulting with a qualified natural health practitioner to get to the root of the fatigue? The British Naturopathic Association (01458-840072) holds list of qualified naturopaths who combine nutrition, herbalism, and homeopathy in their treatment programmes. Referrals are free and you should ask for the name of someone who specializes in treating unexplained fatigue.
In the meantime, anyone who is interested in using MSM for joint problems, including arthritis, should take a look at Lifetime’s new MSM Plus supplement. The American manufacturer has combined MSM with a wish-list of joint-supporting and anti-inflammatory agents including Type II Collagen, Glucosamine sulfate, and Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO); all of which I have written about before.
*MSM Plus costs £19.95 for 60 capsules. Mail order from Victoria Health (0800-413596) and take two a day with food.
