Libido boosting for females
I spent 10 years on my own after my husband died but at the age of 65, I have fallen in love again. Everything is perfect - except in the bedroom department. I really love my fiancee (at 58 he's my toy boy) but I don't have the same zest for sex that I once had. Is there anything that would give me a boost when I need it?
Never mind sowing your wild oats, you and your fiance both need to start eating them! According to a 20-year study by researchers at the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in California (where else?) oats work in the body to activate otherwise dormant supplies of testosterone. This is the main male sex hormone, but women have it too - and any increase in testosterone has been shown to boost a flagging libido in both sexes.
What I suspect you are really after is a herbal alternative to viagra, but since the makers of natural health products cannot make medical claims (unless their product has been licensed), you are not going to find anything described thus. That doesn't mean herbal alternatives do not exist. It just means you need to know what to ask for.
The supplement you need is called Vivace, and is the female version of a male formulation called Veromax. In trials, almost 80% of participants aged between 30 and 70 and all suffering from low or non-existent sex drives reported dramatically improved sexual function when taking this supplement.Vivace has just been launched in the UK following reports from women that it not only increased levels of arousal, but frequency of orgasm too.
Both formulations contain a substance called zizphi fructus (derived from the jujube date) which supports those mechanisms that increase blood flow to the genitalia in both sexes during arousal and in women-only trials in America, 86% of the women taking part said they felt increased levels of desire for their partner.
Regular exercise will also help. In one survey of American swimmers aged between 40 and 80, it was shown that older participants who took regular exercise had sex lives more like those of people who were 20 years younger, while those who did not exercise at all had no interest in sex either.
Low levels of zinc have been linked to low libido too. You can both take a daily supplement of 30mg and increase your intake of zinc-rich foods including nuts and seeds, and oysters!
*Both Vivace and Veromax are available from the Nutricentre (0800-5872290).
