Inoperable liver tumour

My husband has been diagnosed with a liver tumour that is inoperable. I have heard that milk thistle is good for the liver and will not react with any other medication but I am not sure if this is true, where to get it or what dosage he should take. If there is any chance, we will try it, after all, what do we have to lose?

Milk thistle is an important liver-supporting herb, not only because it can help the liver process chemicals but also because it can help regenerate new liver cells. Having said that, this would not be my herb of choice for this condition since there is already cancer activity within the organ and milk thistle should not be used with prescription drugs.

I would opt instead for a new formulation made from the pomegranate fruit which, in clinical trials at the Hollings Cancer Institute at the University of South Carolina, has been shown to halt the mitosis (division) of cancer cells within 48 hours. This is not specific to liver cancer cells but all forms and the key agent in this supplement is DNA-protecting ellagic acid, which can also support liver functioning.

Ellagic acid, which is found in high concentrations in strawberries and red raspberries, prevents the destruction of the P53 gene – which normally works as a safeguard against cancer-causing cell mutations – by cancer cells.

I am not suggesting this supplement is a cancer cure or a substitute for conventional treatment but rather, a useful adjunct if the results reported by the American researchers are really as promising as they look.

*Dr’s A-Z Pomegranate capsules cost £14.95 or 60 capsules and have been standardised to provide a high potency (40%) of ellagic acid. Mail order from Victoria Health (0800-413596). Take one a day.
