Buzz gum ingredients
I was a sugar-free gum chewer but after recently learning about the possible detrimental effects of aspartame which most producers use as a sweetener, I followed your recent advice (10/04/05) to switch to Buzz Gum to avoid this risk. Imagine my shock when my gum arrived and I discovered aspartame as one of the listed ingredients. How can we trust your advice?
I can imagine your shock and unfortunately, the explanation lies in that old chestnut, human error. (Thankfully, not mine which means you can trust my advice.) Buzz gum did originally contain aspartame when first launched in the UK but this controversial sweetener was replaced with xylitol when the product was re-formulated two years ago which was why I was happy to then recommend it.
What you received in error from the distributor was a new formulation pack of 120 chiclets of gum, packed in a security seal plastic pot to which a new employee had mistakenly glued one of the old labels.
Only a few of these erroneously labelled products were sent out by mistake and the UK distributor, Rio Trading (01273 570987), which has confirmed again that the only sweeteners use in Buzz Gum (£9.99 for 120 x 500mg chiclets) are xylitol, sorbitol and maltitol syrup, has agreed to refund customers who were as shocked as you to find the very ingredient they wanted to avoid listed on the old version labels which I think is fair compensation for a very rare error.
