Healing the stomach lining
I was given a cocktail of drugs to help treat a prolapsed disc in my back and have now been left with a very sensitive stomach. I cannot eat any spicy foods, which make me feel sick, but I am only in my twenties and miss being able to go out for a curry. Is there anything that will help heal the stomach lining?
You need to buy some good quality Aloe Vera juice and start drinking a quarter of a glass in the morning, with breakfast, and another quarter of a glass again in the evening with your supper.
Look for a product that is high in the mucopolysaccharides - the active ingredients that work to heal and soothe and irritated or damaged gut lining. Many aloe vera products contain very little of the herb and may be made, instead, from aloe extract or watered down aloe. Aloe gel, for instance, (which is very effective for soothing sunburned skin) is mostly water. For the digestive tract, I recommend the Forever Young brand available from Nature’s Choice on 0208-944 5584. A 1000ml bottle, which should last three months, costs £14.95. Once opened, store it in the fridge.
Your digestive tract with also benefit from a reputable probiotic supplement. Probiotics are replacement bacteria that re-build levels of the good bacteria in the gut but many products. These will have been wiped out by the drugs you have been taking. Solgar has just launched a new generation probiotic that does not need to be refrigerated. The new Advanced Acidophilus Plus (60 veggies capsules cost £7.95) and the Advanced 40 Plus Acidophilus for the over 40s (60 veggies caps cost £11.19) both contain two new strains - Lactobacillus acidophilus LA5 and Bifidobacterium Lactus BB12. A diet that is rich in grains and vegetables and supplemented with green superfoods such as wheatgrass can help remove drug residues which the body stores in the liver, brain and other tissues. Medical herbalists will also use a little-known herbal remedy made from Chaparral (Larrea divaricata) to help flush out lingering drug deposits but this is a potent herb which should only be used under proper supervision.
*Do not use aloe vera internally if pregnant, if taking heart medication, diuretics or steroids. Do not give to very young children. To find a medical herbalist in your area, call 01392-426022.
