Sciatica relief

I have been treated for very painful sciatica by my chiropractor for the last two months; she has now referred me to the doctor for a scan but since I do not like taking painkillers, which upset my stomach, I am looking for an alternative.

The anti-inflammatory I used when I injured my back was New Chapter’s Zyflamend; a patented and high potency blend of nine herbs including anti-inflammatory ginger, oregano and, more interestingly, Holy Basil - which contains ursolic acid to reduce inflammation. If you cannot find this range on sale in your local health shop then mail order from Revital (0800 252875), where 60 softgel capsules cost £25.49.

The makers warn that you may experience what they describe as the “internal sauna” syndrome when you begin to use these capsules - by which they mean you may, especially if you have a sensitive stomach, feel a sensation of warmth similar to that if you were to eat a very spicy meal. Do not be alarmed by this if it happens since the sensation will pass. The best way to minimise it is to take the tablets with a meal and a glass of water and build your tolerance slowly.

The other preparation I used, very effectively, and now keep in my bathroom cupboard in the event of a relapse, was Traumeel; a homeopathic cream and supplement that includes both arnica and calendula, prescribed by my homeopath. Since this is part of a practitioner-only range made in Germany by a company called Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH, based in Baden-Baden, you will need to go back to your chiropractor to ask them to supply it for you and then use as directed on the packets.
