Haemorrhoids which burn and itch
I suffer badly from haemorrhoids which burn and itch, but am not sure which of all the natural remedies I could use work best for this condition?
Haemorrhoids are badly swollen veins located both around the anus and along the very lowest portion of the colon. Those located externally are known as “piles” and while no other animal suffers from them, an estimated 75% of all adults in the Western world will experience this problem at some time in their lives.
The herb that you need to investigate to help relieve the associated itching and burning sensations is butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus); so called because it was the plant of choice to make the straw brooms traditionally favoured by butchers.
Supplements are made from the root and rhizome of this Mediterranean evergreen bush and the active agent, now being researched for its effectiveness against haemorrhoids, is the chemical ruscogenin which has anti-inflammatory properties and which can help prevent the swelling of smaller blood vessels.
Hemaron, which provides a therapeutic dose of 200mg of butchers broom per capsule, is a new supplement from Nutrica designed specifically to tackle this common problem. Each tablet also contains horse chestnut, which has a proven track record in supporting and strengthening blood vessels, plus a newer agent, sophora japonica, which we know better as the Japanese Pagoda Tree.
*You can mail order this remedy from Victoria Health (0800-413596) where 120 capsules cost £19.95, which is excellent value. You need to take three capsules, three times a day and, when the problem clears, cut back to a maintenance dose of one capsule, three times a day.
