Haemmorhoid treatment
I have been using Bioforce’s Aesculus gel (horsechestnut extract) to treat varicose veins in my leg but now have the same problem in a rather more delicate place. I can’t use this gel on mucus membrane and wondered if you could suggest another natural remedy?
Varicose veins are caused by a weakness in the walls of the blood vessels. They are four times more common in women and men, will often develop during pregnancy and may also run in families. Haemorrhoids, which are usually the result of excessive straining during bowel movement due to constipation, are actually varicose veins in the anus and rectum and so will respond to the same treatment. Both standing or sitting for long periods will exacerbate the problem, but herbs and supplements can be very successful in keeping the symptoms under control.
If you are absolutely sure your current problem is the result of varicosity then according to the naturopath Max Tomlinson, you can in fact use the same gel you are using on your legs internally. You must, however, stop if the treatment causes any kind of irritation. Naturopaths draw on nutrition, homeopathy and herbalism and in this case, Tomlinson also recommends you consult a homeopath for a constitutional diagnosis.
Ginkgo biloba is now widely used to promote good circulation throughout the body and once you do have the problem back under control, can be useful in preventing a recurrence. Vitamin E will also help improve circulation to the outer extremeties, including the legs. Rutin is one of the hundreds of bioflavanoids which give citrus fruits and orange and yellow vegetables their vivid colours. They also improve the strength of the body’s small blood vessels and capilliaries, which will help strengthen veins.
Ginkgo Forte 2000 has been formulated to help circulation following clinical trials. 42 tablets cost £10.40; take three a day. Lemon Bioflavanoid Complex contains 1000mg of bioflavanoids, including rutin, and is formulated to maintain capilliary and connective tissue strength. 62 tablets cost £8.24. Take one a day. 50 x 500iu tablets of vitamin E cost £9.92. All three products are available by mail order from Blackmores (0181-842 3956). Add £2.50 p&p per order.
