Glaucoma and macular degeneration
My father has glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration and is about to have a cataract removed. I understand both these conditions are hereditary, which is worrying for not only myself but my two sons as well. Can you suggest anything that might protect us from developing the same problems in the future?
The two key plant chemicals that work to slow down these degenerative conditions are lutein and zeaxanthin. Both are members of the eyesight-boosting carotenoid family and high levels of both in the diet have been linked to a much lower risk of eyesight problems, including age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Both agents act specifically on the light-sensitive retina on the inner surface of the back of the eye and, although you can source both agents from the diet - especially from dark, leafy greens such as spinach and kale, levels of zeaxanthin are relatively low in plants and so you cannot get a therapeutic dose this way.
The solution lies in supplementation, and Springfield’s Macuvite capsules will provide both agents in a high enough dose to provide the protection you need. 30 vegetarian capsules cost £17.99. Mail order from the Nutricentre on 0800 587 2290 and take as directed on the bottle.
