Ginkgo biloba - which brand?
There are so many different brands of ginkgo biloba tablets on sale, I would really appreciate some guidance on which one I should buy.
The very first thing you need to do with any ginkgo supplement you consider buying is to check it will provide a therapeutic, standardised dose - 120 mg a day - of the active ingredients. The reason this is important is because this is the precise dosage that has been widely used in clinical trials by Lichtwer Pharma - a Berlin-based herbal company (with a UK sister division) which has invested heavily in proving ginkgo really does work to boost memory and circulation. In fact, in Germany, ginkgo has now been approved as a clinical treatment for dementia.
Once you know this is the daily dosage you need, you can then look at some of the new generation of supplements that combine the ginkgo with other herbs and nutrients. Revital’s Brain Booster, for example, provides 60mg of ginkgo with 200mg of the Indian herb, gotu kola, and 50mg of phosphotidycholine per tablet so for a therapeutic dosage, you would take two a day. Although nobody has yet proved this claim with clinical trials, binding the ginkgo to phosphotidycholine is believed to dramatically boost its absorption and utilisation in the body.
*Brain Booster costs £27.99 for 60 tablets. Take two a day. Do not use ginkgo biloba supplements if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking anti-coagulant medication.
