Betacarotene

For several years, I’ve taken Nature’s Plus Natural Beta Carotene capsules 25,000 IU Vitamin A Activity (this is what’s written on the label). It is made by a US company called Natural Organics Inc but my supplier has stopped importing it. It’s an amazing cure for colds - I take six capsules, along with 1g of vitamin C at the first sign of infection - and it always works. Do you know where I can get it or something similar? I’ve searched the Internet with no luck.

If ever I have trouble locating any health remedy, I get straight on the phone to the Revital chain of health shops. The company has a policy of backing entrepreneurs and lesser known labels and has never yet failed to find even the most obscure item for me. Happily for you, they also stock the same supplement you have been taking (90 tablets cost £15.70, plus £1.50 p&p. To order call 0800-252875) so you can continue to fend off colds.

Betacarotene generates vitamin A, which is crucial to proper immune functioning - which can ward off colds and other conditions. Carotenes also have antioxidant properties believed to confer significant anti-cancer benefits although beta-carotene is less potent in this context than lycopene, which is twice as effective an antioxidant. Raw tomatoes, which are high in lycopene and low in carotene, have been shown to reduce the risk of oesophagal cancer, for example, by 40%.
