Flatulence

I have an acute problem with flatulence which can be very embarrassing. I am sure I am not the only reader with this problem which you have not discussed before. Can you suggest any remedies for those of us who do suffer?

It may be embarrassing to talk about, but the good news is that there is a simple and inexpensive herbal remedy that you may already have in your spice cupboard and that really will help. If you have ever visited India, you will know that you may be offered fennel seeds to chew after a meal and there is good reason for this since, not only do they work to aid digestion, they help reduce flatulence. That said, the plant is actually a native of the Mediterranean region.

You can buy a ready-made tincture from your local healthstore or use seeds yourself to make a tea to expel wind. Simply boil a teaspoon of fennel seeds in a cup of water and leave to cool for 20 minutes. Strain and drink twice a day.

Biocare (0121-433 3727) sell an excellent intestinal support remedy that combines fennel with peppermint, ginger, chamomile and cardamon oils. This will save you the fuss of making your own tea when you are pressed for time. Called Intestinal Bowel Supplement, it costs £6.95 for 30 veggie capsules.
