Vitamin C as an anti-histamine
Vitamin C as an anti-histamine

I had been told that taking vitamins B and C together will have an anti-histamine action in the body. Since I am a hay fever sufferer, I wondered if this is true. Also, my daughter recently suffered an anaphylactic reaction to a wasp sting. Would these remedies help her too?

Vitamin C is a natural anti-histamine agent - but I am not sure why you have been advised to take it with vitamin B since, to my knowledge, these two are not synergistic and so will not work to enhance the action of each other in the body. What does work synergistically with vitamin C are the bioflavanoids, or plant chemicals, that give plants their rich colours - and one of the best of these, in combination with vitamin C, is rosehip.

Lamberts Vitamin C plus Bioflavanoids is a high potency formulation, which provides 1g of vitamin C, plus plus100mg of rosehip powder and 50mg of additional citrus bioflavanoids. It costs £13.75 for 180 tablets and is available from the Nutricentre (0800-587 2290).

The remedy you need to keep in your medicine chest in case your daughter suffers another anaphylactic reaction is Apis Mellifera, which is the first aid homeopathic remedy for anaphylaxis. You can mail order this from Ainsworths, the homeopathic pharmacy, on 020 7935 5330 and, in the event she has another extreme reaction to a bite or sting, use a 200c high potency, every 10 minutes, while you seek medical attention, and until the symptoms subside.
