Possible genetic damage
Possible genetic damage

My husband and I want to start a family this year but are very concerned that several years ago, we blithely used a lotion following a misdiagnosis of scabies. I have since read reports that this lotion, which contained malathion, can cause genetic damage. Should be still be worried about this and what do you suggest to increase our chances of conception and having a healthy baby?

The fact that you used this lotion several years ago and did not have an adverse reaction at the time is a good sign, but what you need to do now is use a tailor-made antioxidant programme for pre-conception that can help protect the eggs and sperm from damage. The fact that this agent is still available suggests you do not need to be overly concerned about prior usage - but of course, you need to make sure you avoid chemicals now.

Nourish is a new conception conditioning supplement programme that provides antioxidants, as well as additional nutrients to support you through the pregnancy. Zinc, for example, is a key reproductive nutrient, which is often lacking in couple trying to conceive and this programme provides a therapeutic dose for both partners.

For women, the programme also includes Folic acid and energy-boosting spirulina; for men, the range provides antioxidants, plus arginine and taurine to support healthy sperm. The Nourish Conception Programme for Women costs £59.95 and the one for men is £57.50. It includes supplementation, a herbal tincture and massage oils, plus a 44-page booklet on planning for pregnancy and is available from Victoria Health (0800-413596).
