Eyesight problems due to computer work

I work long hours in front of a computer screen and am worried about my eyes, which often end up bloodshot with yellowing whites. I have been taking off-the-shelf multivitamins to try to protect my eyesight, but without much improvement. Is there an effective alternative remedy?

One of the most protective agents for eyesight comes from the humble garden marigold. Zeaxanthin is one of two phytochemicals (the other is lutein) that make up the macular pigment in the eye that is responsible for healthy eyesight. Country Life has launched a new Lutein supplement to help keep eyes healthy and prevent macular degeneration.

If you can remember anything about the structure of the eye from your school biology lessons, you may already know the macular is the most sensitive part of the retina and is found at the back of the eye. It has more nerve endings that any other part of the eye and this high density increases the sharpness of the visual image.

According to new research from the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, high levels of both lutein and zeaxanthin in the diet have now been linked to a much lower risk of a range of eyesight problems including age-related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in Westerners aged 65 and over) and cataracts in older people.

Both agents are found in dark green foods such as spinach and broccoli, and also in eggs. However, for a therapeutic dosage, you will need to take a supplement such as Springfield’s Macuvite, which costs £17.99 for 30 vegetarian capsules and is available from the Nutricentre on 020 7636 0422.
