Excessive sweating
For at least five years now I have suffered from severe excess sweating of the hands, feet and groin area. I find this problem both embarrassing and uncomfortable. All attempts at medication have failed and all the doctors can now suggest is surgery or laser treatment. Can you suggest anything to help?
Your first step should be to rule out any underlying kidney problem, which could be responsible for the excessive sweating you complain of. Jo Pickering, founder of The Practice, a holistic residential clinic in Leicestershire, says you need to go back to your GP to make sure your kidneys are working properly and then think about a combined homeopathic and ayurvedic treatment plan.
The surgery and laser treatment that has been suggested will only deal with the symptom not the cause. Severe sweating can have a deep-rooted psychosomatic cause, which means you should also consider hypnosis.
Ayurvedic medicine, which is currently very fashionable in the West, is the traditional medicine practised in India and Sri Lanka. It is a comprehensive approach to health that focuses on a way of life that includes detoxification, diet, yoga, herbal medication, meditation and prayer.
Like homeopathy, ayurvedic medicine will make a diagnosis depending on what is called your constitutional type. There are three types (or doshas, as they are called) and yours will depend on your physical build, skin tone and texture, sleep patterns, temperament, food preferences and personality. Your sweating is a sign of imbalance in the body and an ayurvedic programme can help rectify this.
The cost of a residential Ayurvedic treatment programme at The Practice will cost from £200. The treatment will include an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation and a panchakarma detoxification deep massage treatment to sweat out the toxins. The clinic also offers a range of complementary treatments, including homeopathy and reflexology. To book, call 0116-259 6633.
