Ear infection prevention

My eight-month-old Grandson has had one infection after another since attending a creche while his mother works. He particularly suffers from bad ear infections and has already taken four lots of antibiotics. Can you suggest anything that will help prevent these infections?

Any child who has taken antibiotics will benefit from a course of probiotics to rebuild the good bacteria that normally live in the gut and help keep the digestive tract and immune system healthy. For a child this young, use Biocare's Bifidobacterium Infantis, which comes in powdered form and costs £22.50 for 60g. Mail order on 0121-433 3727 and give a quarter of a teaspoon mixed with a little warm, filtered water every day for a week.

To tackle the ear and other infections, use a remedy that combines the immune-boosting herb, echinacea with a less well-known plant called plantago. High in soothing mucilage, the latter works specifically to clear both respiratory and nasal passages. Bioforce's new Echinacea Complex combines the two in an easy-to-use herbal tincture. It costs £4.79 for 30ml. Mail order on 01294-277344
