Dry skin after long-haul flight
Dry skin after long-haul flight

I am flying to Las Vegas later this year to get married and honeymoon in the US. On previous long-haul flights, I have found that my skin becomes very dry and I suffer from extreme water retention. Since my wedding is only two days after the flight, I am keen to do something to prevent both problems from spoiling my big day.

Since I fly long-haul on a fairly regular basis I have worked out a simple routine that helps prevent both these problems, but you will need to start in advance of your trip.

If you are not already taking an essential fatty acid (EFA) supplement then start now. You can now get these nutrients in capsule form but I prefer to use an organic flaxseed oil made by the US supplier, Barlean’s, and sold in the UK by Healthy and Essential (08700-536000). Add a tablespoon to your cereal or fruit juice each morning, which will help prevent your skin from becoming dry.

Having tried and discarded numerous potions and creams to apply topically during the flight, I now stick with YonKa’s Mesonium; a double super-booster for the skin which at £65 is expensive - but you get both a rehydrating oil and a fantastic fluid, which includes extract of lavender, and both last for ages because you don’t need to use very much.

YonKa is a French skincare range based on the use of natural plant extracts and oils but, as with any skincare programme, you will get the best results if you have a facial with the person who knows most about it who, in this country, is Linda Meredith (020 7225 2755); whose celebrity client list includes Madonna. This is also the person to mail order YonKa from. If your skin is problematic (i.e. you suffer from acne or spots) do not use Mesonium but ask her for an oil-free alternative.

To prevent water retention during the flight, use the Ayurvedic herb, Gotu Kola, which is now widely on sale in good health stores.
