Diarrhoea, constipation and piles
Diarrhoea, constipation and piles

I suffer from terrible digestive problems where my symptoms alternate between diarrhoea and constipation. I have also noticed blood on several occasions, especially when I have had to strain to pass a stool. I have now been told I have piles so I want a remedy for this and some way to cleanse my digestive system. What do you recommend?

The symptoms of alternating constipation and diarrhoea are absolutely typical of a common digestive disorder called Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which now affects some 20% of the adult population and twice as many women as men. Using natural remedies to manage digestive problems is both safe and effective and I have recently sourced a new herbal supplement from America, which will do both the jobs you want; manage the IBS and cleanse the colon into the bargain.

Ultimate Cleanse is one of the top selling colon cleansing programmes in the US. Made by Nature’s Secret, it adopts a two-pronged approach so you in fact, take two supplements. The Multi-Fiber tablets, which include psyllium seeds, fennel seeds, soothing oats and fibre-rich alfalfa, will cleanse and then keep the colon working optimally. The Multi-Herb tablets include liver-cleansing burdock and milk thistle, detoxifying red clover, ginger root and marshmallow .

Multi-Fiber and Multi-Herb are designed to take together. Start your cleanse with one tablet of each in the morning and again in the evening. Increase the dosage by one extra tablet of each formulation every other day until you achieve two or three bowel movements daily. You must drink more water while taking this cleansing regimen - aim for 8-10 glasses a day - and do not use Ultimate Cleanse if you are pregnant or breastfeeding since the formulation also includes the hormone-balancing herb, Black Cohosh.

To alleviate the haemorrhoids (piles), which are essentially varicose veins of the rectum, take a supplement made from rutin, one of the bioflavanoids that give fruit and vegetables their taste and colour. It has the ability to strengthen small blood vessels in the body and is now widely on sale in good health stores. To benefit, take three 500mg tablets a day.

*Ultimate Cleanse costs £22.95 for the combined programme and is only available from Victoria Health (0800-413 596).
