Dandruff

I have very bad dandruff and although I’ve used almost every well-known product you can think of that should have cleared it nothing has really worked. Can you suggest an alternative solution?

Dandruff is actually dead skin which sloughs off as small white or grey flakes. Using anti-grease shampoos which strip the scalp of its own essential oils can be one cause but poor circulation and poor diet can also cause dandruff.

You may be deficient in vitamin B6, which has been linked to dandruff, and since all the B vitamins work best when taken together, take a good B Complex. Ginkgo biloba, which is now widely on sale in healthstores, will help boost circulation to the scalp. Take as directed on the bottle.

In the meantime, use the cleansing Botanical Therapeutic range which is Canadian and formulated specifically for problem skins, including psoriasis, eczema, seborrhea, cradle cap (in babies) and dandruff.

It utilises ancient knowledge passed down by word-of-mouth among the Nuxalt, Quinalt, Salish, Makah and Nookta Indian tribes and combines healing tree and plant essences with a contemporary nutritional approach. The shampoo and conditioner, for instance, both include nettle to prevent dandruff, avocado, pumpkin and coconut extracts to provide essential oils to the scalp and soothing chamomile, plus vitamins A, B, C, D and E, to stop itching.

*The Botanical Therapeutic range, which is also suitable for acne-prone skins, is only available from Victoria Health (0800-413596). The shampoo is £8.95 for 225ml. The conditioner costs the same. The range includes soaps, moisturisers and cleansing creams.
