Colonic Irrigation

I would love to know more about colonic irrigation - what exactly does it do and would you recommend it for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

One of the statistics I like to drop into the conversation just as someone tucks into their T-bone steak is that in the gut of the average American adult, you’ll find 8lb of undigested meat. If you want to really imagine what state this material is in, think how a piece of meat would look after it has been left untreated and lying on worktop for a week or so.

Colonic irrigation involves cleansing the colon (large intestine) with large amounts of fluid to remove old and impacted waste matter. It can help restore digestive function but it wouldn’t be the first step I would take in tackling the twin problems of IBS and constipation (the latter is usually a symptom of the former). Instead, I would change my diet.

IBS is now believed to be the result of underlying food intolerance. The three main triggers are wheat and dairy products and citrus fruits and tests by researchers at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge has found that eliminating these foods from the diets of IBS sufferers resulted in a dramatic improvement in their symptoms.
