Coenzyme Q10 - which brand?

I would like to take the antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 to boost my energy levels but am confused by the different brands and strengths on sale in health stores. Which one do you recommend and why?

You are right to be confused, not least because although this has become one of the top-selling single supplements on sale, a recent study carried out by the independent ConsumerLab.com organisation found that while some of the brands of CoQ10 on sale contain none of the active ingredient at all, others exceeded the amount claimed on the label by a staggering 75%.

What this means for the health consumer is that unless you have done your homework before purchasing a specific brand, you may be buying something that will do nothing at all for your energy reserves or, more alarmingly, something that actually exceeds the recommended daily dose of 100mg a day, divided into two or three doses.

If you are planning to use CoQ10 to boost energy levels, you should think about taking alongside another nutrient, L-carnitine. Where CoQ10 has become known as “The Capsule of Youth” this second supplement is called “The Energiser” and for best results, you should take both with magnesium.

I recommend Pharmanord’s CoQ10 which provides 100mg per capsule and costs £37.95 for 60 capsules; Lambert’s L-carnitine which provides 500mg per capsule and costs £19.95 for 60 capsules and Lamberts magnesium which provides 150mg per capsules and costs £14.95 for 180 tablets.

Mail order all three remedies from Revital (0800 252 875) and remember, although you may be paying a little more than with other brands, these are reputable companies and you will get what is promised on the label. Take all three supplements as directed on the bottles.
