Why is fizzy water bad?
Why is fizzy water bad?

Why is it not good to drink fizzy water? (Style August 8) I thought I was being healthy downing several glasses of fizzy water every day but now I am worried. Should I go back to the Diet Coke?

I don’t think you could go back to the Diet Coke now, even if you wanted to. It would taste very sweet and very synthetic to your now-weaned taste buds. If you don’t believe me, try a sip and see just how revolting and nutritionally empty it is.

The reason nutritionists suggest you avoid fizzy water is that it contains carbon dioxide, which raises the pH of the stomach making it less acid and less able to digest protein. This in turn can lead to malabsorption of the nutrients in your food. What most people then do is switch to still mineral water although most of the nutritionists I talk to argue that you should get your minerals from your diet and drink as pure a water supply as possible.

I use a system called Aquathin which purifies drinking water through a combined process of reverse osmosis and deionisation. This removes impurities including minerals, fluoride, E-coli bacteria, and nitrates and meets the medical definition of pure water as containing less than 10 parts per million of total dissolved solids.

There are numerous health benefits to drinking pure water (and you should aim for 2 litres a day) but the one that will strike a chord with most readers is the fact that pure H2O will help shrink fat cells by reducing water retention in the body. Again, a kind of osmosis can take place allowing the fat cells to release impurities stored in the water they are holding on to. In this way, pure H2O, which also aids with the release of toxins from the body, is working as a natural diuretic.

Water has five tasks in the body. It must act as a lubricant, a transporter, a coolant, a dispersant and an electronegative enhancer. Pure H2O achieves the latter because it has a high negative charge which is passed on to the body’s red blood cells. These already carry a negative charge to make sure they repel each other to avoid clumping and clotting. What pure water does is enhance this natural charge.

You can rent or buy the Aquathin water purifying equipment and spend anything from £100 for a filter to make the water taste better to £800 which will guarantee a lifetime supply of pure drinking water. Rental charges start from £5 but the company also supplies many healthstores with the purification system and they will sell on purified water for around 25p a litre. For more details, call the Pure H2O Company on 01252-860111 or visit their web site at www.pureh2o.co.uk. Health shops selling this water include Planet Organic in London, Wild Oats in Bristol and Infinity Foods in Brighton.
