Chronic constipation - Ayurvedic herbs
Several years ago, I was diagnosed with intestinal candida and so I no longer eat wheat, yeast, dairy products or sugar. My diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and brown rice but I still suffer from severe constipation, which is making life miserable. What else can I do or take to stop this problem?
The supplement I am going to recommend is a traditional mix of three Ayurvedic herbs which is commonly used in India to help relieve chronic constipation and to detoxify and cleanse the colon. You are going to think it is nothing short of a miracle.
Triphala combines Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica and Phyllanthus embilica to help restore healthy peristalsis which is the wave-like action that moves waste through the digestive tract. Buy the Maharishi Ayur-Veda brand from the NutriCentre (0800-587 2290) and take two tablets at bedtime with warm water. The following night take three tablets and the night after that, take four. After two or three days at this maximum dosage you can then cut back to three and two tablets, eventually weaning yourself off them unless or until the problem returns.
For anyone who wants to learn more about this fascinating and very effective system of healing, (which underpins the whole philosophy of yoga too), The Ayurvedic Encyclopedia by Swami Sada Shiva Tirtha is authentic but still very accessible to Westerners. It is published in paperback by AHC Press. The ISBN is 0-9658042-2-4.
Bananas are natural probiotics and can help re-regulate the bowel. If you want a less hit-or-miss solution, take a good quality probiotic supplement from your local healthstore.
