Chinese mushroom supplements

I have been taking Triton mushroom supplements since I read about them in your column a couple of years ago. I have always suffererd from severe colds which then lead to chest infections. I have had a signifcant improvement in both the number of colds I get and their severity but am not sure if it is wise to take this supplement indefinitely. Can I carry on on should I take a break?

Triton, which combines the reishi, shiitake and tochukas mushrooms in a traditional Chinese formula, is said to support the body, especially the immune system, through times of particular stress.

Reishi has a very calming action and is currently believed safe to take for long periods. Extracts contain high levels of adenosine, a substance linked to Adenosine Monophosphate (AMP) which is an intermediary formed during the body’s process of creating energy from food. In limited trials, people given AMP supplements reported no side-effects either.

You should not take Triton if you are taking medication for blood pressure but since you are not complaining of any unwanted side-effects and since there is no research on the longer-term risks (if any) of continued usage, there is no evidence to suggest you should stop.

Shiitake is such a powerful immune-supporter that it is used by oncologists in Japan to support cancer patients in post-chemotherapy recovery and Tochukas works to support the respiratory and circulatory systems which is why the combination has been so effective in protecting you from colds.

*Triton costs £13.50 for 60 x 500mg tablets and is available by mail order on 01273-625988. Take two a day.
