Chickenpox scar reduction
What can I use to help reduce Chickenpox scars? I’ve been told using vitamin E cream can help but have not been able to find any more information. Also, what can you suggest to help young children during this illness. I hate seeing my daughters suffer like this.
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus which is a relation of the herpes family. The tell-tale rash first appears as a flat, reddish spots which turn into clusters of tiny pimples and blisters that crust over as they heal. In most cases, the rash starts on the torso and spreads to the outer limbs. There are usually few blisters on the head or neck but those that do appear elsewhere on the body are horribly itchy.
Traditional herbalists use Blessed Thistle (Cnicus benedictus) to reduce fever in both chickenpox and measles. It is rich in skin-healing vitamin A, immune-boosting zinc and the stress-busting B vitamins. To mail order supplies, call Herbs of Grace (01638-750140) and use as directed.
To treat the lesions, use super strength Manuka honey. New from Comvita in New Zealand, Active UMF10 Manuka will promote healing and prevent secondary infection. (The 10 is a potency ranking with UMF standing for Unique Manuka Factor.) This super strength honey costs £11.50 for a 375g jar and is now widely on sale in health stores. Use a sterile swab to gently dab the honey onto the healing blisters.
A mild Lavender milk bath can also help relieve some of the itching and irritation of the sores. Once the sores have healed and the scabs have gone, massage a Rosa mosqueta oil into the affected area to prevent scarring. Rich in retinol, which promotes skin healing, it has undergone extensive hospital trials in Spain and South America.
Use the Australian Bush Flower remedies, Black-eyed Susan and Red Grevillea, to stop itching and support the body though the stress of a viral infection. For details, call Ancient Roots on 020-8421 9877.
*Rosa mosqueta is available from Rio Trading on 01273-570987. 20ml costs £9.99. To reduce scarring, massage directly onto the affected areas.
