Cataract remedies

I recently went to my opticians for a routine eye-test and was diagnosed as suffering from cataracts. Can you suggest any alternative remedies that would be beneficial?

Cataracts develop when the protein of the lens of the eye is damaged resulting in a clouding of the lens and vision. If you live long enough, you will probably develop cataracts although they are even more common in smokers and diabetics.

Both vitamins C and E are important for healthy vision. Vitamin C actually activates vitamin E, which in turn activates a major antioxidant called glutathione. Since the damage that causes cataracts is believed to be caused by oxidation, you can see how important antioxidants are to protect against this.

Low blood levels of vitamin E have been linked with almost four times the risk of developing cataracts and in China, researchers found older people who were taking 3mg of vitamin B2 and 40mg of vitamin B3 each day were better protected than those lacking these B vitamins in their daily diet.

Herbs can also help, especially those that are high in a bioflavanoid called anthocyanoside, which protects both the lens and the retina from oxidative damage. It improves night vision, helps the eye adapt to bright light and is found in bilberry, which has a proven record in helping to reduce the risk of developing cataracts in the first place.

For a high potency supplement that has been formulated specifically to maintain the health of the eyes and vision, try OrthoVision. It contains vitamins C and E, plus the antioxidant nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin. A 30-day supply costs £32.90. It is available through selected pharmacy stores or you can order online by visiting the manufacturer at www.orthomol.com.
