Cancer therapy and schizandra

I am recovering from breast cancer surgery and about to undergo radiotherapy. I’m already tired from the effects of the operation and so am looking for something that will not only boost the immune system, but also relax and de-stress me.

The herb that will best support you through the treatment programme ahead is schizandra; an Asian herb which Russian scientists identified as having powerful adaptogenic properties. What this means, in simple terms, it that it works in the body to enhance its own systems including the immune system and its natural defences.

According to Russian research, schizandra will help balance, normalize, and strengthen the entire body. It increases energy and stamina and, in Chinese medicine, is said to calm the heart, which means it meets all your stated criteria.

There are many excellent adaptogenic herbs, including agnus castus and echinacea - but the reason schizandra is recommended to cancer patients is that it can clear out the chemical toxins introduced by cancer treatments and will thus help protect the liver from this onslaught. You need to use the equivalent of 200mg, twice a day.

Last time I recommended this herb, some readers reported difficulties in finding it in their local healthstores. If you have problems, I recommend Solgar's schizandra supplement which costs £14.49 for 60 veggie capsules. For local stockists, call 01442-890355

*Do not use schizandra if you are pregnant or suffering from liver damage.
