Weight management
I am 45 and never had a problem with my weight until the past year or two when I have gone up two dress sizes and more. Exercise doesn't do the trick like it used to, and although I am eating more healthily, the weight is piling on especially around my stomach and hips. My stomach also becomes very bloated. Is there any natural supplement I can take to either suppress my appetite or give me more energy so I can work the fat off?
I am not really a fan of anything with the words “weight-loss” or “appetite suppressant” attached since the inescapable and unfortunate truth about weight management (which does get harder as you age) is that you do have to exercise more and eat less.
If your doctor has ruled out any underlying medical condition that may be responsible for the changes you are coping with, I can recommend several remedies to address the bloating, the hormonal fluctuations that are likely to be taking place in your mid-forties and the desire to have more energy so that you can be more active.
Gentian is a bitter-tasting herb that not only aids digestion by stimulating increased salivary flow and gastric juices but also reduces bloating. You can mail order gentian tincture from Herbs of Grace (01638 712123; www.herbsofgrace.co.uk). 100ml costs £7.95. Take as directed on the label.
To address hormone changes, I take the new Meno Herbs 2, which combines hormone-balancing agnus castus and the uterine tonic raspberry leaf. This supplement is exclusive to Victoria Health (0800 413596). 90 tablets cost £14.95. Take two a day.
To boost energy levels, especially for training, the supplement that is popular among athletes is phosphatidylserine - a fat-soluble phospholipids that is a component of the mitochondrial membrane. (The mitochondria are organelles in the cells responsible for the production of energy).
Phosphatidylserine, which can help support mitochondrial function, is present in many foods but most supplements are made from soy or cabbage sources. Biocare’s Phosphatidylserine costs £31.65 for 30 veggie capsules. Mail order from Revital (0800 252875) and take one a day, 15 minutes before breakfast.
