Breast Lump support
Breast Lump support

I am 31 and need to boost my immune system because I have a lump on my breast which is being removed. Until this happens, we will not know if it is benign or malignant but I want to make sure my immune system is working optimally in case I need more surgery. What supplement should I take and for how long?

One of the reasons I wanted to print your letter is because it highlights a common misconception which is that boosting the immune system can only ever be a good thing. With many conditions, including and especially anything that may be linked with cancer, the opposite is true.

I am not saying that you cannot take steps, under medical supervision, to support and re-regulate your immune system through this time, but the last thing you should be doing is super-boosting it when, if you think about it, the reason you have a lump, cancerous or otherwise, is that some part of the immune system has failed to work optimally to prevent this current condition.

The supplement I think you should investigate with your medical advisors is Simba which is the trade name of a supplement made from the African potato plant. I have been itching to report on this following the release of data from a small-scale clinical observation carried out on both advanced cancer and ME patients which showed that Simba works to markedly improve cell-mediated immunity. (This term refers to any aspect of the immune system that does not include the production of antibodies to fight disease and is monitored by measuring the production of interferon; a chemical produced by a healthy immune system.)

The three-month study was conducted by UK medical practitioner, Dr Julian Kenyon and his team at The Dove Clinic for Integrated Medicine (020 7580 8886) and those cancer patients participating were all post-chemotherapy and suffering from Grade IV tumours. The researchers concluded that Simba was an effective, non-toxic and cost-efficient way of improving cell-mediated immunity.

If you decide to go ahead with this supplement, you can mail order it from the The Little Herbal Company (01484 68500; www.littleherbal.co.uk) where 90 capsules cost £24.50. You need to take one capsule, three times a day.
