What is shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu is a form of massage therapy that has been used in Japan for over 100 years.
Shiatsu is a Japanese word which means ‘finger pressure’. This form of healing massage uses pressure from thumbs, fingers, elbows and knees to concentrate pressure on certain ’energy pathways’ within a person’s body. Unlike more traditional massage techniques, with Shiatsu the client remains fully clothed and no massage oils are used. Most Shiatsu experts subscribe to the theory that the applied pressure creates increased circulation in the body, as well as an improved function of the lymphatic system causing harmful toxins to be released, as well as lessening tension and fatigue.
Who should consider Shiatsu?
Anyone with excess tension or stress, as well as women suffering with premenstrual stress, slow immune systems or low energy levels. Some professional Shiatsu Therapists treat expectant women to relax their muscles and prepare them for childbirth. This is not recommended, however, until you check with your ob/gyn and advise the Shiatsu therapist of your pregnancy so that extra precautions can be observed.
Who should not consider Shiatsu?
This stress relief method is not recommended for anyone with a history of blood clots, internal bleeding, or any communicable, contagious diseases. Also, anyone who suffers from varicose veins, or has bruises, cuts, burns, or external swelling should notify their Shiatsu practitioner in advance so that these areas may be avoided. You also must inform your therapist if you have undergone any recent surgery or medical procedure or if you are on any medication.
Will this treatment hurt or be painful?
Most Shiatsu treatments are administered on a padded surface on ground level, or near ground level. This can be uncomfortable for the obese or those with arthritis. Ask your Shiatsu expert prior to your first visit to determine if there are any physical hardships. The therapist will determine if you need a gentle or a more vigorous massage, based on your individual needs. Every effort should be made for your comfort and relaxation.
What are the benefits in Shiatsu?
Most people experience an immediate sense of well being and relaxation. You may, however, suffer from a headache or flu symptoms for 24 hours after treatment. Although this is rare it is caused by the release of excessive toxins in your bloodstream. You should feel better overall, and move freer and with more ease and relaxation following a Shiatsu treatment.
Who should I see and How much will it cost?
To locate a certified Shiatsu Therapist call 1-800-296-0664 to reach the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks. Depending on who you see and in what area of the country you live prices vary, but are usually between $30 and $40 per session.
How do you prepare for a Shiatsu Massage?
Wear loose clothing, eat a light meal one hour before your massage, don’t have a hot bath or shower on the day of your treatment, and do not drink any alcohol on the day you receive your treatment. Cotton clothes are the most comfortable, and they allow your entire body to ‘breathe’ and release harmful toxins through your pores.
The Japanese have been practicing this art form for over 100 years, and Shiatsu is still going strong!
